Owl on the Hand Experience – Market Harborough

 Discover the wonderfully weird and wacky world of owls with a our half-day owl handling experience, where you will become a trusted perch for several species of owls (consecutively).

Our experienced falconers will teach you all about these facinating birds and the art of falconry. With species ranging from small Burrowing Owls, to the huge Siberian Eagle Owl, with British favourites like Tawny and Barn Owls. We encourage lots of questions, and you will have lots of amazing photo opportunities.

Owls are probably the most popular bird of prey, they are mysterious, funny looking, and fluffy. However, like all predators, owls are cold blooded killers (cute though). We will show you how they expertly blend their daft personalities with the efficient killing skills of a silent assassin. Learn what makes owls so different to other birds of prey; pick up some moulted feathers and feel how soft they are, inspect the regurgitated remains of their prey (pellets), if you enjoy such things.

Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a thrill seeker, or simply curious about birds of prey; our Owl on the Hand half day will leave you with a deeper appreciation for these incredible creatures.

Child Friendly

Youngsters from age seven can participate in this event and they can bring along a parent or guardian free of charge. They can take photos but do not get to handle the birds.

Companions & Spectators
You’re welcome to bring friends or family to share the experience. Spectators stay by your side throughout the session—able to take photos, ask questions, and join in the excitement. While they won’t handle the birds, they’ll still have a fantastic time.

What to Wear

• Dress appropriately for the weather. On colder days, you won’t be moving much—layers are important.

• The ground is rarely muddy, so walking boots or sturdy shoes are usually sufficient.

• Avoid bright dayglo colours, as these can disturb some birds.

• In summer, sunscreen and a bottle of water are sensible.

• If you suffer from hay fever, bring antihistamines—you’ll be outdoors in a grassy field

Have a Hoot – Owl Encounter for Children

A Magical Owl Experience for Ages 4–14

A charming and gentle introduction to birds of prey, designed especially for children. This 30-minute hands-on owl experience gives youngsters the chance to fly and handle real owls, including the beautiful barn owl and, when possible, the mighty European eagle owl—one of the largest owl species in the world!

We’ve created this session just for kids, but if an adult would love to take part too—good news! Adults are welcome to join in by booking their own ticket.

What to Expect

Children will begin by flying one of our calmest owls to and from their gloved hand. It’s an incredible moment—seeing such a graceful bird soar toward them in open countryside. The experience continues with close encounters and photo opportunities with some of our larger owls, and often ends with a chance to meet and (when the bird is in the mood) hold one of our most impressive stars, like the majestic eagle owl.

Sessions are relaxed and usually shared with a small group. While the activity is set for 30 minutes, we’re often flexible with time to ensure each child gets plenty of flying action.
